Libertarian Libyan Solution

By bredbaker - Posted on 14 March 2011

I have been watching with great interest the situation in Libya where freedom fighters are trying to open up their country to liberty.  Something that the current Dictatorship is loathe to do for his people.  Obviously spurred on by the successful efforts in Egypt these Libyan people started with great enthusiasm.  Now, however, great force has been employed against them and all that they have fought for is dwindling.

The United Nations has been lobbied to start a No-Fly Zone over Libya in an effort to stop the air attacks against largely unarmed freedom fighters.  The French and British are pushing hard for the No-Fly Zone in conjunction with the Arab League, however lately air sorties have been scaled back as Pro-Gadhafi ground troops are making more progress.  This could be a sign from Gadhafi himself that a No-Fly Zone would be useless.  China, Russia and the United States are hesitant to use this tactic.  Obviously China and Russia stand to lose defense purchases from Gadhafi, in the case of the United States public outcry for interference has been light with the spectre of what we have been through in Iraq and continually in Afghanistan continues to loom large in the public memory.

Other issues remain cloudy in this situation.  Key of which is no one is sure if the opposition forces are a good alternative to Gadhafi.  Are they really freedom fighters or is this a a Coup in disguise?  It remains a possibility that those who overthrow Gadhafi simply want what he has.  While other countries assume that these are well meaning freedom fighters who they want to arm with weapons and enforce a No-Fly Zone it is possible that they are all being played as fools.

The Libertarian Solution in my mind is that we should join in the chorus of condemning Gadhafi, as he has a long track record of horrendous crimes against humanity.  We should join in any sanctions and freezing of assets that we can.  However we stop there.  No American lives should be put in jeopardy.  Freedom will always win out in the end.  Where ever people yearn to be free, liberty will gain a foothold.  We want a free and open Libya, not another country that acts like a dependent to the UN and the United States.  Yes, Libyan lives will be lost and property destroyed, like in every great revolution.  Freedom and liberty are much sweeter when earned instead of simply given.
